A day at Out to Learn

Our learning spaces offer an opportunity for growth, reflection, and engagement. Every student learns differently and we are committed to providing an environment that accommodates diverse needs.

A day with us is focused on discovery, connection, and confidence, underpinned by our core values of respect, kindness, and well-being.

Every day offers something completely different, here’s a taster of what happens on Thursdays at our Kings Langley site —

Our day begins with a 9.30am soft start. We understand that mornings can sometimes be challenging, so children are welcomed into a calm space to settle in by choosing a quiet activity or game, like chess, Lego, or snakes and ladders.

Around 10am, we begin our morning group activity. This is a carefully planned, playful session with English or Maths woven through, transforming abstract concepts into tangible, memorable experiences. Activities might include story making, code-breaking treasure hunts, origami races, or exploring shapes in nature.

We then break for some play, usually in the garden, before moving to our outside table for a hands-on food prep or cooking activity. We share meals together outdoors around a table, encouraging the children to exchange ideas, experiences, and reflections as part of our community. Depending on the weather, lunch might even be enjoyed up in the tree!

The remainder of the day is devoted to outdoor projects and deeper immersion, where we focus on building trusting relationships with both adults and peers. Activities are often shaped by the children’s voices and interests, covering areas like building, gardening, fire lighting, or nature play. As part of our routine, we make a visit to the site park before heading home at 2.30pm.

Overall, you can expect three or four structured activities designed to build confidence, but the flow is flexible. For example, a recent week included firework drawing using fractions, making bonfire toffee outdoors, apple picking, building our greenhouse, and sharing Halloween stories around a campfire. We are always busy, learning, and creating!

At the heart of our approach is a deep commitment to providing comprehensive support and care for every child – recognising and nurturing their strengths, while addressing their challenges.
